Probiotics for parrots?
My cockatiel just finished a hard antibacterial treatment. Looking for a probiotic sure I can manage so that their intestinal flora can recover faster. Probiotic for children found on sale at the grocery store called culturelle, so I thought if it is safe for children, then it's probably safe for my bird. It says it contains both pro-and pre antibiotics. It contains a strain called Lactobacillus GG. I started to look up on the wiki and said it helps that lactic acid. Birds do not have lactic acid, so they can not digest dairy products. So is this safe for a bird? Does probiotic strains to use in a bird? Does anyone know of a healthy intestinal flora common to most birds have? Thanks for the help! Please feel free to explain all the details of this confusing issue!
Used lactase to digest milk, lactic acid does not, which is a metabolic intermediate product produced in your muscles. Parrots have lactic acid. Parrots do not have lactase, however, and can not digest lactose well, such large quantities of yogurt can cause diarrhea and intestinal problems. However, a small amount of any live culture yogurt should help to establish a normal intestinal population. Culturelle should be OK, too, but probably more expensive. Lactobacillus GG is not part of normal intestinal bacteria of a parrot, that is significantly different from yours. But that's OK – it's not part of their normal gut bacteria, either (usually dies some time after administration. It may still be useful). Whatever you use, remember that you do not need much – you weigh about 500 times what it does.
