The reintroduction of animals in the British Isles?
After reading about the reintroduction of wild beavers to the UK – http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/7419183.stm – I wondered what other species have disappeared from these islands during the last two thousand years? And that realistically could be reintroduced? Or maybe you would like to see some other, more exotic animals – they already have or had the Wallabies, the coypu, American mink and north, near where I live, flocks of ring-necked parakeets!
Other animals that humans have exterminated in the British Isles are wolves, bears, bobcats, elk (moose) and wild boar. The elimination of any species of the ecosystem has a profound effect – for example, deer have no natural predators and therefore must be culled to prevent too numerous and overgrazing of their environment. I personally believe that the reintroduction of beavers is rather short-sighted – Beavers are large animals, and since we have finished with all our large predators, there is probably no large carnivores or strong enough to kill them (except, possibly, gold eagle). This means that after a while, not going to be a population explosion, as well as deer, and will have to be sacrificed. Not only can you reintroduce a link of the food chain with all others. I think this is the government mouthpiece to conservation – the reintroduction of an animal that is seen as threatening not to enable said to be the reintroduction of the animals, while hard to avoid bringing back people consider dangerous species. It would be much greater benefit to the environment to the reintroduction of wolves, for example. They could control the populations of deer in a natural balance between predator and prey, rather than human beings they have to do it. But despite the fact that there is no record of a healthy wolf ever attacking a human, and that wolves prefer their natural prey for livestock, people see as vicious wolf man murderers because the way they are portrayed in the media and in fairy tales and farmers fear their livestock decimated.
