What is the smallest animal to keep in a bedroom?

My roommate and I agreed that we want an animal – something smaller than a cat, but something furry. What is easy to keep hidden? Our bedroom is quite strict and do not like to get kicked out. We wanted sugar glider, but they're expensive as hell. And they can be smelly or loud! Any suggestions? (Keep in mind, we are working on a budget … not exotic please, and we do not like birds.) perhaps hamsters? I know that the cages are a little big, but it is possible hide because you just can put cloth over the cage then only look at a small table or something.
