Outline of the dangers of feeding a diet of seeds of all the birds?
Hey, I'm putting together a public presentation as part of my requirements for going to the fair (4h). Since I have 10 parrots, I thought I would make about feeding birds ... I have to start saying why all diets seeds are a bad idea, and then move on to what kind of diets are good, but pointing to different nutritional requirements between Differant bird species. I'm really looking ... differance life expectancy ... fatty liver disease, etc.. Um ... I never asked. I only asked for help to highlight some facts for me to delve into. You does not help, and I need to talk to my vet to do this. Please remember I asked you to write my presentation for me. You might do better to actually read a question before answering. Goes by the nickname of "Look before you leap.
1. Seed only diets are high in fat and low in nutrition. The high content of fat is what leads to fatty liver, but more importantly, as the bird, there is an increased risk of gout. Gout in birds tends to be high protein and low vitamin A (for seed) diet, as the protein becomes high destructive to the kidneys. The kidneys are unable to filter the uric acid (which becomes the urates in feces) out, and deposits remain in the body. 2. Small birds and larger birds, feed grass seed in nature. The small Bird Seed mixtures are largely composed of millet seeds, which is not part of wild bird diet (only when parrots raid farmers growing millet). So seed diets do not contain the correct seeds. 3.Seeds lack of vitamin A and beta carotene (a precursor to vitamin A), which is vital for a healthy immune system. Over time, this leaves the birds most at risk from infection and disease. 4. Seeds lack of calcium, essential for bone growth and maintenance and a healthy nervous system. Birds with hypocalcemia suffer stress fractures, egg binding, and seizures. 5. Seeds of a lack of vitamin D that is needed to process calcium. Many times, people fill their parrots with a multivitamin containing vitamin D, but too leads to other problems such as gout. There are more, but I was running out. You can email me if you need more help. Good luck.
