Anybody know sloops? Or sailing in general?
Is a sloop an adequate vessel to transport a family of four (two adults, two children, ages 2 and 4) 3000 miles on open sea?
Or would you need a schooner, and if so, could a schooner be operated by a 2 person crew? If you have the answers to these questions I’ll give you BA. If you don’t, I’ll keel haul you! Just kidding…I’ll just give you a stern look of disapproval which you can chalk up to my surly demeanor ever since I got a peg leg, a hook, and an eye patch…Oh, and my parrot bit my ear.
Thanks Captain, I’m, as you might have guessed, a complete novice to sailing. So it sounds to me like a sloop configuration would be possible option. But could it be run by a crew of 2?
Also how long approximately would a 3000 mile journey take to complete on a vessel of this type?
In my humble opinion, a sloop rig is nearly ideal. It is very fast while pointing, simple to configure, and versatile enough for most sailing conditions. I do beg to differ about previous recommendations for size, though. Bigger is somewhat better for comfort, but the way I see it, you should plan on single-handing. Reason being is that, as previously observed, kids don’t make the best crew, and your wife won’t always be able to help with the sailing chores, so make the boat as simple as possible. An exception to this is if you DO happen to opt for a larger boat, then dividing the sail area across more masts makes for smaller, easier to handle sails, but a more complex and more expensive rig. My thought is to make the most of a smaller space, and keep the boat simple. At sea, simplicity is a virtue! As for how long it will take, there is no way to answer that accurately because it depends on wind and current conditions, and your proposed course in relation to them, as well as the characteristics of the particular boat you end up choosing.
