7 foods that are deadly to your parrots
When the parrots were having them as pets, people thought they lived only a short time. This was partly because most of the soft-billed birds wild live only a few years, but also because the parrots were dying within 10 years or more. This is because the diet these parrots were being fed not provide the necessary nutrients and the birds starved basically very, very slowly. Some succumbed to the disease, but this was largely due to the fact that they were malnourished and their bodies can not fight the disease.
Today we know that many of the larger parrots can live up over 100 years old and even parakeets and nymphs can live to 20 or more. This is because we now know what to feed our parrots and what to avoid letting them eat.
There are many good things to feed your parrot, but there are some things you can offer that can kill your beloved feathered friend. The reasons differ, but the results are the same: death.
Foods you should never feed your parrot
There are a few things that really can kill your parrot as far food human will. These are:
• Avocado
• Chocolate
• Alcohol
• Seeds or other fruit
• Raw meat
• Uncooked eggs
• Any food that may have mold or it may have spoiled (including seeds)
As you can see, this is a very short list.
Foods you should limit
This list is much longer and contains nutrients that will not kill your parrot quickly. However, over time, these foods will be harmful to your health. They are divided into three main categories. Some foods may fall into several or even all of these categories:
High-fat foods
Any food that is high in fat should be limited. In the wild, parrots eat very little fat, is mainly eating insects and other protein sources. However, this does not mean that you parrot pal can not have a taste of these foods occasionally. Think about food your parrot as if feeding a child of three years. You would let a child has fries even though they are high in fat and salt, but you would limit the amount. With a parrot, of course, the portions are much, much smaller. If you want to let your parrot have a bite or two of a potato chip only occasionally, there is nothing wrong with this limited amount. Just do not let it become a habit that every day the parrot fries and not let the increase in quantity over time. Everything in moderation is the practice to be followed in this list – each small quantities if what moderation means here.
Examples of such foods include:
• Potato chips
• vegetables with lots of butter
• Fried foods
• Cream, whipped or liquid
• ice cake
• Ice cream
• Meat fat
• Butter cream sauces and soups that contain a large amount of butter
Foods high in salt
Too much salt is not good for humans or birds. Of course, since parrots are much smaller, a little goes a long way. Some foods can only be removed from the cycle food preparation before salt is added to allow the parrot to enjoy a safe service. If your parrot enjoys cooked vegetables and salt to your food, then by all means take some out before adding salt. Crackers can be scraping before allowing the parrot to have lunch. Many foods can be found in versions without salt that can be shared safely with your parrot. For example, unsalted nuts are fine, but eating a large quantity of salted nuts is not good for your child feathers.
Some foods in this category are:
• The salty fries
• salted corn chips
• fruits dried savory
• salted vegetables or meat
• Many prepared foods such as microwave dishes
• popcorn salt
• Bacon, ham and other meats
Foods high in sugar
Parrots can become addicted to the little junk food is allowed. It seems that love sweets and will insist on having a taste. Most sugary foods are perfectly safe to allow the parrot bite or two, but limit the amount that a very small amount and not allow these foods every day. These are for those rare occasions instead of the daily diet.
Examples of such foods include:
• Cakes
• Cookies
• Candy
• sweetened juices
• Other beverages sweetened
• sweet cereals
• Ice cream
Everything else
Everything else you eat, can and should share with your parrot. The more different foods that the bird eats better health, more vibrant the feather colors and the happier you will be. However, use common sense on food supply to parrots.
Fruits and vegetables are very good additions to the diet, preferably raw, but if you prefer some things boiled parrot, which is better than not eating the food. Eggs, cheese, pasta, rice, potatoes Parrot (other than potato chips or french fries), pizza, noodles, pieces of meat or fish and other foods are great for people you. Limit meat to very small quantities, because in the wild, parrots do not get a lot of meat-type protein. Some parrots LOVE a bone with pieces of meat left on it to chew and even going to eat the marrow.
Of course, fruit and vegetables are best for the parrots and for us. But variety is the spice of life and everyone wants variety, including your parrot.
