Ladder Metal
neon screwdriver is useful for testing live wires on a lighting circuit while a ladder?

as the idea is your supposed to should be on the floor with these testers, I'm trying some wires up a metal ladder and wondered if the ladder is blocking the true reading. thanks ..

The idea that should be on the floor when using a neon screwdriver is not correct. They do not work on a mass basis through his body. If this is the case then never work for the people standing on carpets, wooden or concrete floors or using any type of shoes. They work because there is a potential difference between the mass of his body and the thread, even if not personally connected to earth. It is true that illuminate with greater intensity by touching a time using a ground structure, but not essential. In fact, doing that could be dangerous because if the screwdriver is defective you would complete a current path. Most neon Screwdrivers are very cheap and break easily inside, so it can be dangerous. Nor is it correct to think in terms of a "real" reading. They actually did not provide any indication callibrated. What you get is a glow in the neon tube when it detects a potential difference between the blade and the finger. This potential can be directly because of international tension in the wire that touches or can be induced by proximity to a wire live nearby. Stress can be anywhere instead of 90V up to 240 volts for network can not be sure what you're looking at. So, they are indeed inaccurate, potentially dangerous, often unreliable and do not care if you want to be sure of tension in the wires, or even if it is a real "live" or not. On a positive note – they're cheap and work if you on a ladder or not (which is made of) and not even matter if you're Welly rubber boots. The Health and Safety Executive, do not recommend using metal ladder when working national Electricity live in anyway. Even if the ladder has rubber feet (should have) a failure or an error on their part could cause the ladder to become the "Live". This will be dangerous for you and for anyone who happens to touch it. Get a meter or a probe suitable test. The cost is low for B & Q and well worth it.
