How to get rid of the parrots to eat their crops in virtual villagers 2?

I'm still waiting for 250 minutes and silly to grow these crops, and when they do … says that the birds ate them all. I missed a milestone i guess, cuz i have the cutting tools and knowledge of herbs, but i cannot get rid of birds! HELP!
